Microwave Plasma Metals Continuous Emissions Monitor Project Year End Report 1998
نویسندگان
چکیده
Significant progress was made during the past year to develop a sensitive, real-time continuous emissions monitor for accurately measuring a variety of hazardous (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, RCRA) metals which can be present in the off-gas or stack gas of a thermal treatment process. The current work has focused on six metals: arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury. The year started with the analysis of results from a joint DOE/EPA sponsored performance test at the EPA Rotary The majority of the activity during the year has been occupied with laboratory research and development at the MIT Plasma and Science Fusion Center to make performance improvements in the microwave-plasma continuous emissions monitor. The main features of this activity has involved the development and characterization of a fieldable calibration method, experiments with various longer and narrower plasma dimensions, improvements in optics and microwave component configurations, and measurement of plasma parameters to improve understanding of metals emission performance.

Detection of Plutonium with the Microwave Plasma Continuous Emissions Monitor*
The first successful detection of plutonium with a continuous microwave plasma emissions monitor has been demonstrated. Seven plutonium emission peaks in the 362 366 nm and 449 454 nm ranges were clearly observed. The strongest peak was at 453.62 nm. This peak and five of the other plutonium peaks were easily distinguishable from possible interference from iron emission peaks with a spectromete...
متن کاملLow Power Superconducting Microwave Applications and Microwave Microscopy
We briefly review some non-accelerator high-frequency applications of superconductors. These include the use of high-Tc superconductors in front-end band-pass filters in cellular telephone base stations, the High Temperature Superconductor Space Experiment, and high-speed digital electronics. We also present an overview of our work on a novel form of near-field scanning microscopy at microwave ...
متن کاملTrace elemental analysis of airborne particulate matter using dynamic reaction cell inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry: application to monitoring episodic industrial emission events.
The elemental composition of airborne particles is being increasingly monitored since several metals have been implicated in adverse human health outcomes and environmental deterioration while simultaneously providing clues to the identity and strength of their emission sources. However, quantification of several elements and transition metals in ambient aerosols, which are typically present on...
متن کاملCharacterization of metals emitted from motor vehicles.
A systematic approach was used to quantify the metals present in particulate matter emissions associated with on-road motor vehicles. Consistent sampling and chemical analysis techniques were used to determine the chemical composition of particulate matter less than 10 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10*) and particulate matter less than 2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5), including a...
متن کاملEmissions Inventory Development and Processing for the Seasonal Model for Regional Air Quality
The Seasonal Model for Regional Air Quality (SMRAQ) project is an effort to model ozone formation and transport from May to September of 1995 for the eastern two-thirds of the continental United States using a 36-km grid resolution. The emissions inventory was derived from the 1990 and 1995 Ozone Transport Assessment Group (OTAG) inventories. This paper describes the experiences and insight gai...
